Understanding your legal duties and rights as a home educating parent
Your Duty
Parents must ensure a suitable, full-time education for a child of compulsory school age—at school or otherwise (home education).
You don't have to follow the National Curriculum; many families use it as a guide.
Local authorities may make enquiries to satisfy themselves education is suitable—keeping your plan, samples and reflection notes helps.
If your child is currently on a school roll, you can deregister by writing to the head teacher (different process for special schools).
Exams: home-educated students sit GCSEs as private candidates via approved centres.
